The Arizona Woodpecker (Picoides arizonae) was formerly known as Strickland's Woodpecker (P. stricklandi) as well as Brown-backed Woodpecker. Strickland's Woodpecker is now a separate species which may be found in parts of Mexico. The Arizona Woodpecker is a resident bird of oak and pine canyons in montane areas of southeast Arizona and southwest New Mexico. The male Arizona Woodpecker in the top 4 shots on this page was in Cave Creek Canyon, Chiricahua Mountains, Cochise Co., Arizona, in May, 2008. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
