Image Sales & Usage:
Image sales: I am a freelance nature photographer and I earn my living by selling my photography. I regularly sell image license for publication to various magazines, books, advertisements, and other media. My prices are flexible, but for an industry standard I use the publication "Negotiating Stock Photo Prices" by Jim & Cheryl Pickrell in determining my pricing structure for various uses. I am not in a position to supply images to publications, web sites, or other uses without compensation. This is a business to me, and while I certainly support conservation efforts and conservation and wildlife non-profit organizations, I must earn a living just like you. If everyone involved in a non-profit conservation project, such as writers, editors, publishers, designers, presses, etc., are all donating all of their work without any compensation, I would consider doing the same, but I must admit to being frustrated on a regular basis that photographers are the people asked to donate their work while others involved in conservation projects are paid their normal wages. Wildlife photography is very expensive and very time consuming. My photography equipment and the many trips I make to take photos are funded with sales of my wildlife images. Please contact me for information regarding pricing for any publication such as books, magazines, outdoor or indoor signs, web sites, etc. Please keep in mind that the images posted on this web site are low resolution images designed only for web use in both size and color space, and are all copyrighted. I can make high resolution, 45 meg (or larger if necessary), 16-bit tiff (or any other format) files from any image you see here to suit your publishing needs. I also encourage you to contact KAC Productions and/or VIREO for more examples of my work. KAC and VIREO are photo stock agencies which carry my images as well as those of other nature photographers. KAC deals with nature photography of all kinds while VIREO (Visual Resources for Ornithology at the Academy of Natural Sciences) handles only bird images. Prints: I do not regularly sell prints since, to be honest, the effort involved for me to make a quality print, wrap it securely, and mail it is quite a bit of trouble for the prices I can get for prints. My main income is from image sales to books and magazines, but I will do prints on occasion if someone is seriously interested. I am unwilling to send a digital file out so that it can be printed at your local drugstore, but I will make a print myself if someone is interested. Some additional comments about copyright:
Copyright is most often infringed simply because it is misunderstood. Therefore, I have added this information to my site to help others understand why we have copyrights and how we utilize them. Thanks for taking the time to review my copyright policy.
It is illegal to scan, copy, or reproduce in any way a professional copyright image. I typically allow school children to use my images in their reports and I try to allow other uses of this type as well. Please contact me with any questions. Still, I am a freelance photographer and make my living selling photos for publication. In order to travel, buy film and equipment, and survive I have to earn an income like everyone else. My website has generated a great deal of interest in my photos which I appreciate, but unfortunately the requests for free or donated photo usage has grown to the point of numerous daily requests. My business is SELLING photography and I certainly appreciate your understanding. Possession of one of my photos or electronic images does NOT constitute the right to scan, copy, or reproduce it in any way without the expressed written consent of Greg Lasley Photography.
Some quick tips about copyright:
* Photographs are copyrighted the moment they are taken, and no copyright notice is required.
* Postings to the Internet are not granted to the public domain, and such postings don't grant any permission to do further copying.
* The "fair use" exemption to U.S. copyright law was created to allow things such as commentary, parody, news reporting, research and education about copyrighted works without the permission of the author, anything outside of those areas is considered a violation.
* Copyright is not lost because you don't defend it; that's a concept from trademark law.
* Work derived from a copyrighted work is a copyright violation. A derivative is defined as any form of changing an original copyright piece, i.e. lighten/darken, crop, rotate, filter, combine with other images, etc. Still a violation.
* Copyright law is mostly civil law where the special rights of criminal defendants you hear so much about don't apply. However, recently in the USA commercial copyright violation involving more than 10 copies and value over $2500 was considered a felony.
