Long-tailed Duck
Clangula hyemalis
The Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) is a small diving duck which breeds across the Canadian arctic and most of Alaska. The common name of this species was Oldsquaw for many years but it was changed to Long-tailed Duck in the 1990s. In the breeding season the male does indeed display a very long tail. The species winters down to the northern coasts of the United States, but occasionally individuals wander farther south. In Texas perhaps a few individuals show up each winter. The first 11 shots on this page show an immature Long-tailed Duck in Austin, Travis Co., Texas, in January, 2010. These images were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
