The Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) nests in the southeast United States and in partss of the southwest. It occuppies riparian areas, mixed woodlands, parks, etc. The bird shown here, a molting male, was at Marathon, Brewster Co., Texas, in September, 2005. It was digitally photographed with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.

The young male Summer Tanager in the next 3 images was near Vanderpool, Bandera Co., Texas, in April, 2008. This is a bird which was hatched the previous year, thus the plumage that is still partially yellow. These images were taken with a canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender.

The mature male Summer Tanager on the left was in Pima Co., Arizona, in May, 2008. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 1.4X extender.
