The Swainson's Hawk (Buteo swainsoni) nests across the great plains and in other grassland habitats of the western United States. The species migrates in large flocks all the way into South America for the winter. The top four images here, of birds in various plumages, were all roadside shots with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 600mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender near Marfa, Presidio Co., Texas, in September, 2005.

The next four shots of Swainson's Hawk in flight, were taken near McCook, Hidalgo Co., Texas, in May and June 2006
with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens. In one shot a Western Kingbird may be seen harassing the hawk.

The next two shots were taken of migrant Swainson's Hawks along a roadside near the Davis Mountains, Jeff Davis Co., Texas, in September, 2006. These images were taken with the same gear as described above.

The adult Swainson's Hawk perched in a mesquite tree on the left was photographed with the same gear as above in Hidalgo Co., Texas, in May, 2007.

The Swainson's Hawk on the left was at Henry's Lake, Fremont Co., Idaho, in June, 2007.

The mature Swainson's Hawk in the next 4 shots was taking off from a perch in a yucca plant in Jeff Davis Co., Texas, in May, 2008. These images were shot with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
